Those Screaming Kids

Have you ever been in a public place where kids are totally out of control? They cry and scream because they’re tired or not getting what they want. These tantrums are hard to take – for both the parents and anyone else in close range. I startled myself one day when I was a witness to one of these scenes. I realised that sometimes I acted like one of those kids.

Before my husband and I got our spending under control, I had a mental temper tantrum whenever I thought I couldn’t get what I wanted. I had all kinds of thoughts running through my mind. “I need this!” “I want this!” “I deserve this!” And like most of the parents you see with screaming kids, I would give in to the whining. I would buy whatever it was that I wanted, even when I knew that my credit cards were dangerously close to their limits and that we would be having a tough time making ends meet that month.

We just can’t have everything we want. Whenever you’re on your way to a store, take some time to think through what you really need to buy there. Take a list of the things you need to buy, and don’t even look at anything that’s not on your list. If you’re going in to browse, be especially careful. Wandering aimlessly through a store can end up being expensive. Don’t go anywhere to spend money without a plan.

Learn to tell yourself NO! Set limits on your spending and then follow them. It will be hard at first, but your inner child will soon learn what’s best.
