There are plenty of reports of consumers misusing credit cards. This might make you skeptical of owning a credit card. If you keep the following tips in mind, however, you’ll be sure to keep your credit card spending under control.
Set Limits for Credit Card Use
If you use your credit card for all of your expenses, your spending can easily get off track. Set a minimum purchase amount, such as $25 or $50, for your credit card. Use cash or a debit card for purchases less than your minimum credit card purchase amount.
Have Money to Cover Your Charges
Before you use your credit card for a purchase, make sure you have money in the bank to cover the charge. If you need some extra discipline, subtract your credit card charges from your bank account in your account register. You will be able to see how your credit card purchases are really affecting your cash reserves.
Pay the Statement Balance Every Month
This is probably the most difficult tip for credit card holders to follow. If you’re unable to pay the entire balance now, set a goal to make extra payments to your credit card until it’s paid off. Then only charge what you can actually pay every month.
