Many of us are turned off when we hear or see anything about finances. “I just don’t understand that stuff” or, “That’s all so complicated” are two of the thoughts I used to have when it came to finances. I found out that it makes life much easier if you learn some things about finances. And it’s really not that difficult to do.
You might be like I was and have no idea where to start when you decide to get your finances in order. Writing checks, using a credit card, and balancing the checkbook were about the extent of my financial knowledge. I found out that I was not doing myself any favors by staying in the dark about finances.
Start your financial research at your local library. Ask one of the employees to help you find the section devoted to books about personal finance. You can find books about everything from how to spend less money to budgeting to investing. Start small and choose a subject you want to learn about. I made the mistake of checking out every book that looked interesting all at one time, and it was overwhelming. The financial experts don’t always agree on every financial subject, so you will need to make decisions about what is best for you and your personal financial situation. I ended up taking suggestions from many experts.
It’s good to have a basic understanding of what financial terms mean. I don’t even want to think about how many loans and credit cards I had before I even knew what APR (Annual Percentage Rate) means. You don’t need to be a financial expert to get your finances under control, but you’ll find that you feel a lot more comfortable dealing with your finances if you have some knowledge about what common financial terms mean. It will give you more confidence, especially when you need to talk to someone about a loan or investment.
