If you’re like me, your debt situation has built up over time. Your money troubles might have started two years ago, ten years ago, or so long ago you can’t even remember when you first knew you were headed into trouble. You probably knew deep down inside that something was wrong. But, like so many of us, you didn’t do anything to stop the downhill slide.
Where do you go from here?
First of all, acknowledge that you’ve done a great thing by admitting that you need to do something about your finances. That’s a big step. None of us wants to believe that we’ve gotten ourselves into a mess with our money. We’re smart and creative. We’re responsible and independent. We do what’s right. We do have many good attributes, but we’re not perfect. Somehow, we’ve mismanaged our money.

It was difficult for me to stop dwelling on the financial mistakes I made in the past. I had made some huge mistakes, so I had lots of material to work with! It took awhile for me to realize that these negative thoughts were draining my energy. We can all sit around and say what we SHOULD have done. That’s easy, because we know the outcome. Learn from your mistakes, but stop beating yourself up about them. Spend your time and energy looking forward and making plans to correct your financial situation.
My suggestion for you:
Focus on what you can do to straighten out your finances. Stop thinking that what you’ve done in the past can control what you can do now and in the future. Learn the lessons from your mistakes and move on!
