A Little Bit at a Time - Getting Out of Debt

When you’re in the middle of a bad financial situation, it’s easy to become overwhelmed. You don’t have enough money to buy groceries, the mortgage is due, and you have no idea how you’re going to come up with the money for your child’s braces. You want everything to be fixed NOW!

One thing I’ve discovered is that it takes time and hard work to get out of debt and financial messes. When my husband and I decided that it was time to take action, things moved too slowly for me. I wanted the debt to GO AWAY! What I wasn’t thinking about was that it took years for us to get in to this situation, and it wasn’t going to go away overnight. This is a difficult thing for anyone to accept, but the sooner you understand this, the easier it will be for you to deal with your debt.

We were trying to juggle payments for six credit cards, two cars, a mortgage, and a home equity loan. This debt didn’t suddenly appear one day. We accumulated it before and after we got married. Even though it had taken years and years for our finances to reach a horrible state, I expected our debt to be gone instantly once we decided to take control of our finances. It doesn’t work like that.

If you're in debt, think you can get out of it?

Concentrate on taking small steps to turn your finances around. Pay off your smallest bill, make all your monthly payments on time, or go a month without adding more debt. It all counts in the long run.

My suggestion for you:

Give yourself credit for the small steps you take to get out of debt. Keep in mind that getting out of debt takes consistent work, and it will take time. A lot of little changes will eventually result in the big change you’re looking for.
