Credit Cards » How to Get Back on Track
When my husband and I started on our new financial journey, we were hesitant at first, and then we became very enthusiastic about saving money and finding new ways to manage our money. After a few months, though, we started to slide back into our old ways. We weren’t keeping track of our spending like we should, we stopped checking our account balances, and we made a late payment. We learned that although managing our finances was easier after making some changes, we still had to be diligent about sticking to our new ways of doing things.
It’s important to realise that no one is perfect, especially when it comes to finances. Everyone makes mistakes. But we had to learn that there’s a difference between making an honest mistake and doing something just because that’s what we’re used to doing. We knew what we needed to do. We just didn’t do it.
The first thing you need to do if you find yourself straying from your new methods is to congratulate yourself for realising it! It’s very easy to fall back into the old way of doing things, and sometimes it’s difficult to even know you’re doing it. When you realise you’re backsliding, stop and pay attention to yourself. You’ll probably be able to correct what you’re doing without any consequences if you take action right away.
Try to figure out why you were going back to your old ways of managing your finances. Did you just forget? Is the new way too complicated? Are you having a bad day and just don’t feel like having to think about what you’re doing? Are you trying to get back at your spouse for something he or she has done? There are plenty of reasons that people revert to their past ways of dealing with finances. If you can determine what your reason is, you’ll be able to get back on track in no time.
If you end up in another financial mess, don’t give up. Look at the work you’ve done so far with your finances and decide if you need to make some adjustments. Avoid dropping your new plan altogether. You might need to start all over from the beginning. Don’t be ashamed if you need to do that. Give yourself credit for your hard work and perseverance, and commit to finding the right plan for you.
My suggestion for you:
If you find yourself falling back into your old ways of money management, stop and determine what the problem is. Get yourself back on track as soon as possible, and don’t give up.
