Fixing a Bad Credit Rating in Australia

Although having bad credit greatly reduces financial and borrowing options, it does not completely diminish all options. However, the better a credit rating, the more likely the marketplace will be willing to extend lending services. Following are steps that can be taken to aid in fixing a bad credit rating.

First, credit report mistakes should be corrected. Approximately 25 percent of credit reports have a mistake of some kind on them, for many reasons, some as simple as two people sharing the same name living on the same street. Generally, reporting agencies do not have the time or resources to investigate instances like this, and it can cause marks against you that have been assigned incorrectly. These errors may be challenged, as they can have bad implications for future credit scores.

Next, paying off credit cards will greatly help a credit rating. Missed payments on credit cards reflect poorly on credit reports and applying for credit cards with the lowest rates will help ensure you can meet your repayments. Some infringements in credit card usage can take more than two years to be removed from credit reports and ensuring you’re paying as little interest as possible will decrease the chances of further infringements. Take your own steps to pay off debts or visit a credit counselor for assistance.
