Two Basic Types
When you talk about gold and platinum credit cards, you are talking about one of two things. The major credit card companies, like Visa and MasterCard, carry gold and platinum credit cards. These are the top-of-the-line cards and typically carry extensive rewards.
However, there is another type of gold and platinum credit card, and this is one that you probably want to avoid. Some companies will target individuals facing a credit crisis, offer them a “gold” or “platinum” credit card, and tell them that this card is a good way to raise their credit rating. These cards are not issued by major credit issuers, and they can only be used in select places. Sometimes they come with a special catalogue that the user must shop from to buy the items he needs. There is no special benefit to owning one of these types of credit cards.
Potential Benefits of Gold and Platinum Cards
The gold and platinum credit cards offered by the credit card companies are typically offered to their best consumers. Those individuals who have proven that they will pay their bill on time every month, have a good amount of money coming in each month, and have an established credit history are good candidates for these cards. The cards typically carry plenty of perks.
For instance, a gold credit card may offer free insurance on travel and car rental purchases. It may also have a cash back or rewards points program. Some will offer free fraud insurance, and most of these cards have very high credit limits.
Protecting Yourself from Hidden Problems
So how can you avoid the problematic “gold” and “platinum” cards? First, watch out for any card that is not associated with a major credit card company. Also, make sure that you do not apply for a card with high upfront fees. If there are fees, make sure the benefits you are receiving by owning the card outweigh those fees.
If the card is associated with a 900 or 976 phone number, avoid it. You will pay to make the phone call, and no legitimate card company is going to make you pay to call them. Also, all of the major credit card companies are going to have 800 numbers you can call when you need service.
Finally, watch out for gold cards promising to improve your credit. Remember, the credit card companies like to offer gold cards to their best customers, not those who are struggling with credit issues. If you are working to rebuild your credit, a secured credit card may be a safer, and more affordable, option. If, however, you are a valued customer, you can benefit form the rewards associated with legitimate gold and platinum credit cards.
