Your Habits May be Costing You Money

Have you ever arrived at work and wondered if you locked the front door when you left the house? Or have you ever started drying your hair after your shower and wondered if you actually washed your hair?

If we do something out of habit, like locking the front door or washing our hair, we don’t always pay attention to what we’re doing. This isn’t always bad. Our habits and routines help us get through each day. But when it comes to money, our habits can cause problems.

Years ago, I lived near a store that had great prices. I shopped there because our money was tight and I could save money on lots of things we needed. The problem was that I went to this store every week. And every week I bought anywhere from $25- $75 worth of things that we “needed.” Going to this store every week became a habit. I loved going in and finding all the good deals. After I walked out with all my bags, I figured out how much I had “saved.” I finally figured out that the money I “saved” every week was money I could truly be saving.

Sometimes we buy things out of habit. It’s been a few weeks since we bought soap, so we buy soap. Our kids like cookies, so we pick up a bag or two every week at the grocery store. We’ve had the same cable service for five years, so we keep the service and automatically make the payment every month. You’ve used the same car insurance company ever since you started driving, so you renew your policy with them every year. All of us make small and large purchases out of habit every day.

Have you bought something you wish you hadn't?

We all need to pay more attention to the money we spend. Whether your financial situation is stable or rocky right now, paying more attention to what you spend is sure to have a positive result.

My suggestion for you:

Stop and think about every purchase. Make sure it’s necessary and not just something you’re buying out of habit. Be relentless about this and question yourself about everything you buy. You can keep track of your savings for motivation.
