Congratulate Yourself!

Deciding to get ourselves out of the financial disaster we had created was one of the greatest decisions my husband and I have made. It was not easy, and we stumbled along the way, but all the hard work was worth it.

As you’re improving your finance situation, make sure you give yourself credit for everything you do. Some of your changes will be small, and you might not think that they will mean anything, but all your improvements combined will make a huge difference.

Sometimes it can get discouraging when you don’t see improvements as quickly as you’d like to see them. Remember that your finances didn’t get into the state they’re in overnight, and you won’t be able to fix them overnight, either. Turning your finances around takes patience and a commitment to your new lifestyle.

Make sure you congratulate yourself along the way. You have a right to feel proud of yourself and your accomplishments! One way that my husband and I found to give ourselves encouragement was to keep records of our finances through the years. We can look back and see how much we had (or didn’t have) in our savings account, how much we were paying every month for our loans and credit cards, and our loan and credit card balances. It’s almost unbelievable to us when we look back now.

My suggestion for you:

Remind yourself what a good job you have done and are still doing. Be proud of your financial accomplishments!
